About this product

My Very First finished piece in the shop. 

I am proud to say this stump was recovered from a felling, in south Manchester Didsbury. It was brought back with a few loads that I've had in my workshop, seasoning for over a year now. I started work on it with just 8% moisture so there was not any movement in its shape or structure during the work. 

My first job was levelling out both sides of the stump with my router sled so I had an idea of its finished look. With most natural origin woods when you season the wood,  fibers want to open up as they dry out after holding that moisture when it was alive, which creates cracks, this has one right through to the center. It also has some openings where branches came from.  I chose a classic black epoxy resin to fill the cavities. This makes the stump whole again and gives it a strong bond. I then sanded every small detail of the table top to give it the mirror like finish.

Before I gave the table its first treatment it was already full of beauty from growing and fighting through the elements of its surroundings. I used my natural home made Happy Boy shampoo oil to further bring out the character. The wood fibers were saturated in oil giving the oil days to reach deep into the pores to give the ultimate protection against moisture. It was then time for its second and final treatment of the Happy Boy wood wax, again another home made natural product. I spend time polishing the wood, working the wax into the surface of the wood. The smell is amazing and to touch so soft and satisfying.

The table top has been fitted with the very popular and contemporary hair pin legs, black to match the table. 

This will make a beautiful center piece as a coffee table, or a side table. The best thing about a table like this and all my natural origin products is there will never be one exactly like it. No copy, no mass produced build process. These products aren't for everyone, which makes them special. Special to you, unique to you, and an art piece to show to friends and family.
